First Place Orioles Receive Taiwanese Animation Treatment

(Next Media Animation, 9/13/2012)

Last year the Boston Red Sox suffered an epic meltdown, dropping 20 of 27 September games and losing out on a Wild Card berth to the Tampa Bay Rays, who they led by nine games on Sept. 4, 2011. This year the New York Yankees may suffer a similar fate. The Yankees led the American League East by 10 games in June but have gone 33-32 since July and are now tied with the Baltimore Orioles at the top of the AL East, with Tampa Bay only three games out.

If the season ended today, Baltimore would win the division based on a tie-breaker and the Yankees would play the Oakland A’s in the Wild Card round. But there’s still 20 games of baseball left for the Yankees, Orioles and Rays — and that’s bad news for the Yanks.

The Yankees are old, hobbled by injuries and spoiled by the largest payroll in baseball. The O’s are a scrappy young team that has gone 26-13 since August. The Rays have the best rotation out of the three and have gone 23-15 since August.

If the Yankees don’t win the AL East, they may not even make the playoffs. The Los Angeles Angels and Detroit Tigers are only a few games behind the Yankees in the race for the final Wild Card spot.

H.L. Mencken, the ‘Sage of Baltimore’

September 12th, 2012  marked the 132nd anniversary of the birth of H.L. Mencken, the influential writer, journalist, satirist and social critic known as the “Sage of Baltimore,” who died at the age of 75 in 1956.

The Sun’s Frederick Rasmussen talks about Mencken’s life and work, discussing the Scopes Trial, bathtub hoax, Mencken’s first beer after the repeal of Prohibition, his coverage of presidential nominating conventions and more.

Rasmussen opens the video as follows:

Henry Louis Mencken was born and raised in Baltimore, grew up in Union Square, and of course went on to become a celebrated American journalist. Years earlier he had written in his epitaph, which is:

“If, after I depart this vale, you ever remember me and have thought to please my ghost, forgive some sinner and wink your eye at some homely girl.”

Jacqueline M. “Jackie” Zajdel, a popular Canton cosmetologist who was a maestra of the shag, beehive, French twist and teased hair for decades, died Aug. 24 of cancer at Mercy Medical Center. The longtime Highlandtown resident was 67.

…”I was shocked to hear of her death. She was at my Christmas party last year and looked just great,” said Mr. Waters.

“I had known Jackie in the downtown bohemia of the very early 1970s, when she had gotten to know Divine at Marinello’s, which is the Harvard of Beehives,” said Mr. Waters.
