Decades-old December tradition continues past the death of Sparrows Point

The five-pointed star, made of stainless steel and dozens of heavy-duty light bulbs, looks deceptively simple. Its symbolism is anything but.

Not long after Bethlehem Steel built the Sparrows Point steel mill’s massive “L” blast furnace in 1978, workers erected the “Star of Bethlehem” at the top — a reference to the longtime owner as well as to the nativity. The star has shone from on high in December ever since, its meaning slowly transforming from an eye-catching example of the steel mill’s might to something deeper and more emotional.

Animals on Parade at the 2010 Mayor’s Christmas Parade

The Canine, Equestrian, and Canine Superhero Divisions are highlighted by Atomic TV at Baltimore’s annual “Mayor’s Christmas Parade,” held Dec. 5, 2010 in Hampden.

The 2012 Annual Mayor’s Christmas Parade takes place Sunday, Dec. 2nd at 1 PM.

Brandon Walker – “Chinese Food On Christmas”

An oldie but goodie from the Baltimore Or Less Christmas archives. Happy Holidays!

Brandon Walker wrote “Chinese Food On Christmas” for a college songwriting class and then decided to turn it into a music video that accrued over 2 million views, got him some international press coverage, and even a few marriage proposals.

Locations include Towson’s historic Senator Theatre and Hunt Valley Towne Center.

Baltimore bars and their patrons celebrate Dec. 25 in a unique way

In a rowdy Bolton Hill tavern, they argued over whether the black bile spewing from kung-fu hero Jet Li’s mouth was really chocolate sauce or chewing-tobacco juice.

Down at a Fells Point watering hole, the debate was also juice-related: whether to stick with the 2002 Joel Gott zinfandel or sample the 1986 chardonnay from Cakebread Cellars.

Over National Bohemian beer and popcorn, stuffed lobster and Chateauneuf-du-Pape, two rather different groups of urban dwellers spent Christmas Day in an untraditional, but quintessentially Baltimorean, setting: the neighborhood bar.

“I figured years ago that there were other people like me out there, who did not have anything to do or anywhere to go,” said Mount Royal Tavern bartender Mick King, who has been hosting a “Kung-Fu Christmas” party in the Bolton Hill dive bar for five years.
