BALTIMORE – Residents of North Baltimore awoke to the boom of a large explosion Sunday morning.

It was the sound of an unused natural gas tank imploding. BGE demolished the Melvale Gas Holder located near W. Coldspring Lane and the Jones Falls Expressway just before 7:30 Sunday morning. The sound resonated across Baltimore with reports of it being heard as far away as Parkville and White Marsh.

The natural gas tank has not been used since 1997. When it was operational the tank supplied natural gas to pipelines when demand was high and stored it when it was lower. Upgrades to the regional natural gas system made the facility obsolete.
